Bottom line: This is an English browser story game that requires an account. You pick an existing world, make a character, and a Narrator continues from your choices. The free plan is playable, but catalog worlds are capped. It is not a three-button branching book, and it is not a no-login toy.
One-minute overview
- What you do: Enter a world that already has a setting and cast, then play as your own character.
- First move: Sign up, open the catalog, pick an adventure-shaped world rather than adult romance, then create a character.
- Where the AI sits: Hidden Door calls the writer the Narrator. It builds the current story from your choices instead of reading a fixed script.
- Is there an ending? No campaign finale. You can keep opening stories inside a world. The free plan limits how many catalog worlds you can play, not each sentence.
- Language: The interface and useful input are English. Use the first-run route below, then interpret the rules in your own language.
Why it’s interesting
Hidden Door is not a blank sandbox that starts from one empty prompt. The official pitch is: pick a world, add Modifiers to change vibes and storylines, create a character, then let the Narrator build a living story. Worlds are made of cards — characters, items, locations, and the stories you have already played (their accumulated lore). Cards unlock and change as you play.
The difference from a generic text adventure is that the worlds have provenance. On 13 August 2025, Hilary Mason and Matt Brandwein wrote that early access includes public-domain favorites such as Pride and Prejudice and The Wizard of Oz, plus partner worlds: an alien encounter with Alan Dean Foster, *Big Fan* by Alexandra Romanoff from 831 Stories, and The Crow with Pressman Film. The homepage examples are blunt: start a book club with Dracula, fight a wyvern on the Brooklyn L train, or challenge Mr. Darcy in space. Those are the company’s own illustrations. They are not a promise that every world still sits in the catalog today, or that the same prompt yields the same scene.
On 19 September 2026 the catalog still showed worlds such as The Tavern Door, Oz University, and Dracula, alongside Big Fan, whose blurb is adult romance. The free-plan feature list includes mature content. That makes this a good fit if you want to mess around inside a world you already know. It is a poor fit as a kids’ story machine, and a poor fit if you need a Chinese UI or a page that plays before login.
How to try it
First run: learn the loop, do not collect worlds
- Open the original link on this page and go to [Hidden Door](https://hiddendoor.co/).
- Create an account. The early-access post says you sign up and play in the browser. Use whatever login the page offers that day; do not depend on one third-party button.
- Open the world catalog. On 19 September 2026 the prompt was
Choose a world. - Skip adult romance for the first session. If
The Tavern Dooris still listed, use it: hunt artifacts, enter dungeons, spend loot on a bigger sword.Oz UniversityorDraculaalso work if you want fantasy or gothic tone. - Create a thin character — a traveler who just walked in is enough. Do not paste a biography.
- Do one concrete thing: walk in, talk to the bartender, or pick up the map. Wait for the Narrator. Add Modifiers only after that first scene exists.
Do not spend the free five-world cap on the first night. Finish one short story and see how cards accumulate.
Interface words
| Label | When to use it |
|---|---|
world | The setting and cast. The free plan caps how many catalog worlds you can play. |
story | One sequential adventure inside a world. The free plan advertises unlimited stories and turns. |
Modifiers | Remix tone and plot. Add them after the first clear scene. |
Narrator | The model that continues from your choices. |
cards | Characters, items, locations, and stories you have played. |
catalog | Other people’s worlds, including community listings. |
character conversation | One free private chat per day. Do not spend it at minute one. |
Atlas | The world-building tool. Ignore it until you have played. |
Choose a world | The catalog prompt we saw on 19 September 2026. |
First small goal: do one job in the tavern
| Step | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick The Tavern Door (or Oz University if it is gone) | Start with a rules-clear, non-romance door |
| 2 | Give the character a job and one goal, such as finding a less embarrassing sword | Keep the first prompt short |
| 3 | Walk into the tavern and ask the bartender for a rumor | See whether the Narrator continues the room |
| 4 | Talk to one character or pick up one item | Watch a card get added |
| 5 | Stop and inspect what unlocked | The free world cap is real; learn before collecting |
Do not treat the homepage’s Darcy-in-space gag as a required opening line. It shows that choices can go weird. It is not a walkthrough.
Three ways to keep playing
#### 1. Fan route: enter a world you already know
If you came for Oz or Dracula, use Oz University or Dracula. The early-access post describes these as fan experiences meant to catch the spirit of the source, not a page-by-page recitation. Concrete actions beat pasted quotations.
#### 2. Remix route: finish one scene, then add Modifiers
Official copy puts Modifiers after world selection, as a way to change vibes and storylines. Add them after you have seen the base world, or you will not know what you changed.
#### 3. Builder route: play first, then open Atlas
Writers can turn existing text into playable worlds, then play solo, share, or publish. Pricing copy calls the publishing tool Atlas and lets a world be public or unlisted. Partnerships can include revenue when others play. That is an advanced path. The free plan also mentions creating your own worlds; you do not need that to learn the game.
Stuck points
- Blocked before login: This is not an instant browser toy. Early access said sign up first.
- Chinese input goes nowhere: Write short English actions, such as
I walk into the tavern and ask the bartender for a rumor. - You opened
Big Fanfirst: The catalog blurb is adult romance. Switch to the tavern or Oz if you only wanted the rules. The free plan also lists mature content. - You spent the daily character chat immediately: Pricing copy gives one free character conversation per day. Learn the main story first.
- Fear of a mid-story paywall: The FAQ says it is not pay-per-turn and will not interrupt a story. Paid plans change world caps and chat limits, not each sentence. This page does not copy prices that can move.
- You filled five worlds on night one: The free plan allows stories in up to five catalog worlds. Learn one.
- Players under 13, or handing the account to a child: The privacy policy requires guardian consent at 13–17, and people under 18 cannot join the creator payout program. This guide assumes a reader who can judge mature catalogs.
- Do not drop real people, enemies, or minors into a character: Output goes to a generative model and is bound by Hidden Door’s terms.
Requirements and sources
Is it for you?
| Gate | What we verified |
|---|---|
| Cost | Freemium. Free: unlimited stories and turns, up to five catalog worlds; paid plans lift world and chat caps. We did not copy a dollar price on 19 September 2026 |
| Account | Required |
| Install | No; a modern browser is enough |
| Language | English UI and English input |
| Network | Required |
| Rating | Free plan lists mature content; the catalog includes adult worlds |
| Ending | No campaign credits; you can keep opening stories |
| Progress | FAQ: canceling keeps stories and progress, but you cannot create new custom cards until you resubscribe |
Good if you already care about a story world, will create an account, and can read short English. Bad if you want a 15-second no-login toy, a Chinese interface, or a substitute for the original book.
Who made it
The company is Hidden Door, Inc. Hilary Mason and Matt Brandwein signed the 13 August 2025 early-access post. On 19 September 2026 we opened the homepage, pricing page, early-access post, and catalog: signup is still required, the free plan still cites five catalog worlds, and tavern / Oz / Dracula still appeared as doors. Catalog entries, partners, and free caps can change.
